Every asthma patient is different. Some people only deal with mild symptoms, while others have life-threatening asthma attacks that can send them to the hospital — most patients fall somewhere in between. The Asthma Control Test (ACT) is a simple tool that can help you determine if your asthma is under control.
The Asthma Control Test
The ACT is a simple questionnaire designed to help patients identify their asthma symptoms. It allows patients to see whether their asthma is well-controlled and can be shared with a healthcare provider.
Reading Your Results
ACT scores range from 5 to 25. Scores above 20 suggest asthma is under control. Scores below 20 may indicate inadequate control, and scores in the 5-19 range warrant a conversation with your physician.
Is the Test for All Ages?
Patients 12 and older use the standard ACT. Children ages 6-12 should use the ACT-CR (caregiver report version). Children under 6 with severe symptoms should receive immediate medical attention.
When to See Your Doctor
Scores below 20 warrant a pulmonologist consultation. Annual check-ups are recommended regardless of your control level.
