Essential Oils and Sinus Infection — What’s the Link?

Sinus infections can be miserable, but essential oils may help ease symptoms and promote healing.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, distilled or press-pulled from flowers, leaves, stems, and roots. They have been used in therapeutics for centuries and are commonly used in aromatherapy to promote physical and emotional well-being.

Essential Oils and Their Role in Sinus Infections

  • Reduce inflammation and swelling in the sinuses
  • Clear out mucus and congestion
  • Soothe headaches
  • Lessen facial pressure
  • Boost the immune system to help fight infection

Oils Commonly Used for Sinus Infections

  • Peppermint oil — its menthol content opens the nasal passages; add a few drops to hot water and inhale the steam, or mix into a carrier oil like coconut oil for a cooling balm
  • Eucalyptus oil — reduces inflammation and clears congestion
  • Tea tree oil — has antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Rosemary oil — has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties; mix into a carrier oil and apply to the chest and neck
  • Frankincense oil — has calming, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties; applied to the chest rather than used in aromatherapy
  • Lavender oil — has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties; add a few drops to a diffuser or humidifier

Other Methods of Dealing with a Sinus Infection

  • Saline nasal irrigation — a saltwater solution flushed through the nasal passages using a neti pot, nasal bulb syringe, or spray to relieve congestion and reduce inflammation
  • Steam inhalation — loosens mucus and congestion; essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint can be added to the hot water
  • Warm compresses — a warm, damp towel or heating pad on low can reduce pain and pressure
  • Hydration — plenty of fluids such as water, tea, and broth help thin mucus

Final Note

Essential oils can help with mild to moderate sinus infections. If your condition becomes severe, contact a lung doctor right away.
